Madrid is the capital city of Spain and has a population
of almost 3 million. It is located on the geographic center of the Iberian
Peninsula, comprising Spain and Portugal. This gives it a typical continental
climate…….hot dry summers and cool winters. However the fact
that it lies 646 metres above sea level acts as a moderating influence.
As in much of Spain, spring (March-May) and October are the best times
to be in Madrid.
The weather is generally agreeable, the city has a fresh feel to it and
it isn't too overrun with tourists. If you love to party, visit during
May for Madrid's biggest fiesta. You might like to book ahead though, as
it can be quite difficult to source accommodation at that time.Madrid is
a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs
open late into the night. Don't be surprised if you get stuck in a traffic
jam at four in the morning, and the people you meet are not necessarily
going off to work !!
It is a cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public
Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish
Royal Family. Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial
sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the
city. Madrid is a city of great monuments. Among its highlights are the
medieval center dating back to the Habsburg Empire and the Prado Museum..
