If you enjoy walking or taking a stroll, you can easily visit most of
the centre of Madrid on foot. However, to get from one district to another,
it’s better to go by taxi. There are plenty of them about. They are
relatively inexpensive and they don’t mind taking you on short journeys.
Hiring a car is also an option if you don’t fancy using public transport.
However it isn’t always a good idea as it is difficult to drive and
park on the narrow old streets of Madrid.
Buses are useful on the main roads like Paseo de la Castellana. They all
have air conditioning which is a must in Spain. They are frequent and run
all day from 6am until midnight and some run at night as well. However
often they can be slow due to the sheer weight of the traffic in Madrid.
The Metro, or underground railway, consists of a network of 12 lines running
every day from 6.30am until 1.30am.It ia by far the fastest and easiest
way of getting around the city. You can buy a single-journey ticket (1.10
euro for an unlimited distance) Tickets can be purchased at underground
ticket offices.

Finally if none of the above suits you, you could always avoid the traffic
jams and rent a moped. You need to be careful on the roads as traffic can
be dangerous, but it is a cheap and easy way of getting around especially
in the city centre.
